The AI Writing Patterns That Make Readers Tune Out (And How to Break Them)
AI writing doesn't fail because it's wrong. It fails because it's predictable. These are the structural patterns that signal 'this came from a machine' to readers — and the specific edits that fix them.

The problem with most AI-generated content isn't accuracy. It's predictability.
Readers don't consciously think "this was written by an AI." What they feel is something duller: a faint sense that they've read this before. That the hook was expected. That the middle section didn't surprise them. That the conclusion landed exactly where they thought it would.
They don't click. They don't share. They scroll.

Pattern 1: The Rhetorical Question Hook
"Have you ever noticed that the most successful leaders all seem to have figured something out that most people haven't?"
This opening pattern appears at statistically elevated rates in AI-generated content because it performed well in the social media training data the models learned from. The problem is that it's now everywhere — and readers have learned, consciously or not, to discount it. It signals: the writer defaulted to a template instead of actually starting from a thought.
The fix: Start with the thing you actually want to say. If the post is about why leaders prioritize context over instructions, start with that observation directly. "Leaders who consistently make good decisions don't have better judgment — they have better information infrastructure." That's a claim. It creates curiosity through substance, not through a question that implies you're about to answer it.
Pattern 2: The Universal Framework Structure
"There are three things the best founders get right that most people miss..."
AI writing is structure-first. When asked to explain a concept, models default to numbered lists, before/after structures, and "X things about Y" formats because these appear frequently in training data and map cleanly to "good content structure" signals. The framework becomes the content, rather than the content generating the structure.
The problem is that complex ideas don't always fit cleanly into three-point frameworks. When they're forced there, the framework flattens the nuance. The third point exists because three points is the conventional structure, not because there are exactly three things worth saying.
The fix: Choose structure after you've identified what you actually want to say, not before. If the idea has two genuine components, write two sections. If it has five, write five. Breaking from the conventional "3 things" structure is itself a signal to readers that the content has substance — it needed its own structure rather than being poured into a default one.
Pattern 3: The Qualification Cascade
This one is specific to Claude's Philosopher dialect, though it appears in other models too.
"While it's certainly true that X is an important factor, it's also worth noting that Y can play a significant role depending on context. Of course, this varies considerably based on the specific circumstances involved..."
This pattern emerges from models trained to be honest and careful — they've learned that overclaiming is bad, so they hedge extensively. The result is writing that sounds authoritative but says very little. Every claim is immediately qualified into ambiguity.
The fix: Commit. If you're writing a post, you're making an argument. State the argument. "Context matters more than rules for most management decisions. Here's why." If the qualification is genuinely important, include it once, specifically, not as a shield against being wrong.
Pattern 4: The Abstract Example
AI writing reaches for the most universally relatable version of every example, which means it produces examples that are abstractly true and specifically meaningless.
"Consider a founder who is facing a difficult growth challenge. They have to balance short-term concerns with long-term strategy while managing team dynamics..."
This example is universal enough to apply to everyone, which means it resonates with no one. It has no specificity, no surprising detail, no sense that this came from an actual situation someone encountered.
The fix: Replace abstract examples with specific ones. Not "a founder facing growth challenges" but "the Q3 we hit our revenue target and immediately lost our three best engineers." The specificity is what makes examples credible and memorable. AI can generate the structure around a specific example if you provide it — the specific detail is what you bring.
Pattern 5: The Conclusion That Restates Everything
AI writing almost always ends by summarizing what it just said. The last paragraph of a ChatGPT post is typically a variation on "In conclusion, the key takeaway is that..." followed by a restatement of the main points.
This produces the flattest possible ending. Good writing ends on something that opens out — a specific call to action, an unexpected implication, a question that the preceding argument has earned the right to ask. A summary closing signals that the model ran out of things to say and defaulted to a template.
The fix: End on something forward-looking or specific. What should the reader do next? What's the implication they might not have considered? What's the hardest version of the problem you've just described? Endings that open rather than close create the "I need to share this" response.
Pattern 6: The Characteristic Phrases
At the vocabulary level, certain phrases appear at elevated rates in AI content because they appear frequently in the high-performing content that models trained on. If your content contains multiple instances of these, it reads as AI to experienced readers:
- "It's worth noting that"
- "Delve into"
- "Navigate the complexities of"
- "In today's fast-paced world"
- "Game changer"
- "At the end of the day"
- "Move the needle"
- "Let's dive in"
- "Thought-provoking"
Search your drafts for these before publishing. Their presence isn't definitive — but clustering is diagnostic.
The Systematic Edit
When editing AI-generated drafts, working through these six patterns systematically is faster than trying to rewrite by feel:
- Does the opening start from a genuine claim or observation, or from a rhetorical question template?
- Is the structure driven by the content's actual shape, or by a default format?
- Are claims stated with appropriate directness, or hedged into ambiguity?
- Are examples specific and grounded, or abstract and universal?
- Does the ending open forward, or summarize backward?
- Are characteristic AI phrases present?
Six passes on a 300-word LinkedIn post takes less than five minutes. The result is content that passed through AI generation for efficiency but reflects the writer's actual voice and perspective.
The alternative — applying a voice layer at the generation stage rather than the editing stage — produces better results with less effort. But the edit targets above work regardless of which approach you're using.
